COACH TIP: If you are new to wigs, have limited time, or not that comfortable wearing wigs in public, I suggest you choose a similar color to your own, pick a style that will be easy for you to manage based on your lifestyle, and go with a wig that is a manageable length and texture. The longer the wig the more maintenance and upkeep it will require – no matter what it’s made of. When it comes to a synthetic wig, the type of “texture” can mean more or less maintenance. I have several videos discussing this topic further – but for the most part silkier and curly wigs tend to tangle the most. Yaki (chemically relaxed hair texture) textured wigs, wigs with some “grip” to the fibers, and/or a wavy styled wigs are usually the easiest to manage. This is not a hard and fast rule but a basic guide for you to make your choice.

Wow! That was a lot of information! The more you learn and the more experience you have with wigs, I promise a lot of this information ill make more sense and your wig choices will be easier to make. Step #2: Purchasing Your Wig Now that you have decided on the wig you’d like to purchase, there are three vital steps that you do not want to skip. Completing these steps PRIOR to purchasing a wig will save you time, money, and disappointment. Measure your head. After you have put in all the effort to pinpoint a wig you want to purchase, you want to ensure as much as possible that the wig will fit when you receive it. The wig cap of a wig can come in various sizes. I will be honest with you wig sizing can be inconsistent and vary between brands and even in different wigs from the same brand. One way to be sure if you are getting a wig that will fit you is to know your measurements. Here’s a chart and guide to measuring your head and understanding your wig size. More name brand wigs often come in specific sizes that can include petite, average, and large. Not every brand or every style will have all three options available. So be sure to double check the size you are purchasing. Affordable wigs do not often come in “sizes”. This is partly because they are made to be customizable. Therefore, the next step is crucial.

Check out reviews. How a wig looks online or in stock photos versus how it looks on you can be very different. There are so many quality wig reviewers and educators on YouTube that can be very beneficial for you. If you find a wig that you would like to purchase, search that wig on YouTube and watch a few reviews. COACH TIP: When you are watching a wig review, I suggest you watch several reviews so that you can get a well-rounded idea of the wig and if it will work for you. Wigs can look different in various lighting and can look completely different from person to person. The first, and most important review to watch, is from a reviewer providing you with thorough information. I have a video outlining what you should learn from a quality wig review - as not all reviews provide you with the important information you need. If possible, find reviews of the wig in the same color, or color family, to the one you are considering. Try to find a reviewer that is close to your skin coloring and has similar features to you. Be sure to ask a reviewer what their head measurements are as well as their height. Height can drastically affect how a wig lays, especially regarding length. Watching these various types of reviews will give you a barometer as to whether that wig is right for you. Please keep in mind, the wig may not look or lay the same on you as it does on them, so the next step is critical. Read the fine print. Understand the shipping information as well as what the return and exchange polices are. You can do everything I suggest, and when you get your wig, it still may not work for you for whatever reason. Therefore, it is so important that you understand what the company’s policies are in the event you need to return a wig (if the company allows it). Whether or not a wig can be returned could be a very important factor, especially if you are purchasing a wig that is expensive and/or if you are on a limited budget.

Step #3: What to Do When Your Wig Arrives You have purchased your wig and now it has arrived. There are a few things you want to do – before you remove any tags or cut the lace. Be sure that this is the wig you purchased, and it is in the color you desired. Mix ups happen so be sure this is the correct wig before you proceed. Next, you want to remove it from the packaging and take off the netting (if necessary) and inspect the wig. Look over the cap construction and fibers to be sure it’s up to par. Once you determine this is the correct wig and you are satisfied with the quality, shake out the wig a bit. Though most wigs are packaged well, they still need to be shaken to loosen the fibers. COACH TIP: I often try the wig on quickly - tags on, lace intact - for a basic idea of how they wig looks on me. Keep in mind that you may need to “play” with the wig or customized it a bit, to get it to a place where you feel satisfied. Putting in on can give you a basic idea as to whether the color, length, style, and fit will work for you. Keep in mind wigs that are customizable and have lace fronts that require you to cut them, can fit slightly tighter while the lace is intact.

If you are satisfied with the initial look and fit, go ahead and take the tags off and get ready to put on the wig. Before putting on your wig you want to consider wig security. There are several features and items that contribute to how well your wig will stay on when you wear it. Wig caps, whether they are nylon, bamboo, mesh or another material, can be a big part of wig security. They also help contain and protect your bio hair and can provide a layer of comfort between your head and scalp and the wig. Some wigs will come with combs and adjustable straps that can be Velcro, hook and eye, or a pulley system (similar to a bra strap). Many name brand wigs do not come with combs, as many are used for medical reason where combs would not be necessary or would be uncomfortable. In that case a wig grip is the way to go. Not all caps and wig grips are created equal, so I made videos talking more about wig caps as well as reviewing and comparing a variety of wig grips. Finally, you want consider wig placement. A common mistake for newer wig wearers is to place their wig too far forward or two far back. If you aren’t sure where your wig should be, check out the little trick I shared in the last blog. Remember, don’t be afraid to shift the wig around until you feel the wig looks and feels the best.

STEP #4: HOW TO MAKE YOUR WIG LOOK NATURAL (AND WHAT YOU WILL NEED) This is the last step in your wig purchasing – and wearing – journey. For many, making your wig look as natural as possible and feeling comfortable and confident in it is an essential part. I shared a list of wig tools and products you are going to want to have on hand that will help your wig look as natural as possible. I have added additional deets to that list to help you better understand why they are important and how to use them. A wide toothed comb. Though I often use a wide tooth detangling brush, I suggest you stick to a wide tooth comb in the beginning. Wide tooth combs will help prolong the life of your wig and will not damage the wig fibers like some other combs and tools might. Dry shampoo. Sometimes you may get a wig that looks a bit shiny. Shine in bio hair is good – shine in a synthetic wig is not! Shiny wigs can look “fake” in a doll hair type of way. Using dry shampoo helps take that shine down. A wig spray. A detangling wig spray will also help prolong the life of your wig. There are many sprays available that are formulated specifically for synthetic wig fibers. Synthetic wig fibers are not porous like hair and therefore product build up will cause the fibers to break off and become brittle over time.

Powder. I use a pressed powder foundation in the part and along the hairline of a lace front wig to make it look more natural and blend in with my skin. You can use most powders you have on hand although I prefer a pressed powder foundation as it seems to stick a bit longer than other powders.

A wig head or wig stand. Wig stands or wig heads can help you keep your wig in good shape in between wears. It can also help you be ready to put it on and go when you are on the move. I love to use a wig head to style my wigs. I have several with wigs on them in various styles, in case I need to go somewhere at the last minute.

Again, this isn’t an exhaustive list and doesn’t contain any heat-related tools or products, as some wigs are not heat-safe. These are the tools and products I recommend for those of you just starting out with wigs as there are tons out there to choose from. In the beginning – keep it simple! The more you learn about wigs and the more experience you gain, you will incorporate different and/or additional tools and products to your kit. Don’t waste money on things you may not use or want.

COACH TIP: You may need to “mess with” or “play with” the wig a bit – especially if the wig has bangs and/or is a full cap. Don’t forget all the things you may already have or can purchase to style and accessorize your hair that can be used for wigs. Grab a cute headband, sparkly barrette, or a pretty hair scarf to take your wig to the next level. Wearing wigs should be fun, so don’t limit it to just putting it on as is. Grab a cute hat, add braids, or pin it up for a pretty or casual updo.

So, there you have it! Your step-by-step guide to purchasing and wearing your first wig…or your next! Don’t forget, wig wearing is a journey! It can be so much fun and add to your life in ways you may have never imagined. Enjoy this ride and as always…Life is short, Wear Wigs!

Looking to get your first wig but don’t know where to start? In this article from wig coach & guest blogger Tia, she breaks it down for you – step-by-step! Getting Started Let’s start the step-by-step roadmap to help you decide which wig to purchase all the way to putting it on and wearing it out! Deciding to wear a wig, no matter what the reason, can be overwhelming. There’s so much to understand, know, and learn about wigs, it can be difficult to know where to start. You can definitely fall into the rabbit hole when trying to find wig information and you will continue to learn more and more as you progress through your wig journey. Still, knowing the basics of where to start can make that journey easier, more enjoyable, and save you precious time and money. Step #1: Choosing Your Wig There are several questions you will need to ask yourself to narrow down the immense wig selection that’s available. I have a basic video exploring these questions, as well as one where I go more in depth, but let’s get started exploring what you want and need now. Grab a piece of paper or open your notes app and answer the following questions for yourself.

What is the price range you are willing to spend on a wig? Do you want synthetic fibers, heat-friendly, human hair, or do you have no preference? Do you have the time and/or the desire to style a wig or would you prefer a more “put on and go” option? What are your preferences when it comes to hair style, texture, length, and color? What is your comfort level with not only putting on a wig, but also wearing it out in public? Depending on how you answer these questions, it will determine what type of wig you are looking for. Don’t worry if you aren’t quite sure how to answer each question or change your mind as you move through the process. Step #2: Purchasing Your Wig Now that you have some idea what type and style of wig you would like, it’s time to choose a style and purchase it. Before you click “add to cart”, there’s one more important step you need to do…measure your head. There’s nothing worse than receiving your wig, only to discover it doesn’t fit properly. A wig that’s too tight can be very uncomfortable and even cause headaches. A wig that’s too big can be difficult to secure and can fit in a way that is unflattering and even annoying!

Now that you know what style you want and have chosen the perfect color, it’s time to add it to your cart, right? Not quite yet. There’s one additional step that I think can be very valuable to your purchasing decision…check out reviews! Looking up reviews and videos on the wig you are interested in can help you ensure you are choosing the best wig for you. How a wig looks online versus how it looks on you can be very different. Watching videos on the wig you plan to buy can save you time, answer additional questions, and help you feel confident in your purchase. I have a video outlining what you should learn from a quality wig review - as not all reviews provide you with the important information you need.

Ok, so now you are ready to purchase the wig! Don’t forget to review the shipping information as well as review the return and exchange policies. If you receive your wig and aren’t sure you want to keep it, these policies will be very important. Step #3: What to Do When Your Wig Arrives Yay! Your wig has arrived! Now what? First things first, take your wig out of the box - but don’t remove the tag yet. If you determine this wig isn’t for you, it will need to have the tags attached to be able to return or exchange it. Time to try on the wig and see how it looks! First, shake out the wig a bit. This will help loosen the fibers and bring the style to life. There are a few things to get or consider when you are first putting on your wig. You will want a wig cap and potentially a wig grip to help with extra security. Not all caps and wig grips are created equal, so I made videos talking more about wig caps as well as reviewing and comparing a variety of wig grips.

Next, you want consider placement.A common mistake for newer wig wearers is to place their wig too far forward or two far back. If you aren’t sure where your wig should be, here’s a little trick. Take your four fingers and place them on your forehead starting at your eyebrows or brow bone. This should give you a good starting point for wig placement.Don’t be afraid to shift the wig around until you feel the wig looks and feels the best.

Remy hair wigs are long-lasting (up to one year!), hold up well to styling, and have great shine. They’re heat-safe and style just like your real hair. Virgin hair wigs are unprocessed with a very natural look. Virgin wigs are long-lasting and can be heat-styled. Always in naturally-occurring colors, they are less common and more expensive than chemically treated hair. Virgin Remy wigs are the gold standard for human hairpieces. From clip-on extensions to half-wigs and toppers, they are top-of-the-line quality and you can style them as if they were your real hair!  Wig Cap Types and Constructions Ever wonder how wigs are made? It all starts with the base, or “wig cap”. A wig cap is the base material used to attach synthetic fibers or human hair strands to create and shape a wig. The latest wig cap constructions have a more natural/realistic look and are lighter, as well as more durable, which can increase comfort, and wear times. When choosing your wig, be sure to consider the cap construction to ensure a great fit for you. Here are the various types of wig cap constructions, along with their features and benefits. Basic or Capless Construction The basic or capless cap is the most common, sometimes called standard or traditional, wig cap design. This cap is constructed using narrow strips of material, or wefts, that are attached to the frame of the wig, usually by a machine. The top of the wig cap base has a solid lace top (closed top), where only the sides and back are designed with open rows (wefts). Because the wefts are open, you can actually put your fingers through them and touch your scalp. This open weft design helps provide a lighter, cooler, and more comfortable fit. In order to help conceal the rows of wefts, the base of the wefts are “crimped” or have shorter fibers added. These features also create lift and volume. Most wigs in this category are considered low maintenance because they are ready to wear out of the box, with minimal styling and preparation needed. Capless wigs are great quality at a budget-friendly price. Total Capless Construction

Total Capless is much like the capless construction. The difference is not only are the sides and back designed with open rows (wefts), but the top area is designed this way as well (instead of a solid lace top on the Capless Construction). As with the Capless Construction, the total capless construction features the open weft design. It is considered to be lightweight and provide ultimate ventilation. Monofilament Construction Monofilament wig caps have a nearly transparent sheer top, made of lightweight, fine mesh material, and emulates the appearance of a natural scalp. The hair is attached by hand-tying one or two strands at a time to the mesh material, which helps the strands to move more freely, just like a natural head of hair. The monofilament area is located at the part, the crown, or the entire top of a wig cap. A monofilament part (mono part) allows for multi-directional parting while creating the appearance of natural hair growth. A monofilament crown (mono crown) creates the appearance of natural hair growth where the hair is parted at the crown. The full monofilament top (mono top) allows for parting in any direction, which will give you the biggest opportunity for styling flexibility. Double Monofilament Construction A double monofilament cap is designed with an added layer of soft fabric for extra comfort, which is great for someone with a sensitive scalp, including those who have received medical treatment such as chemotherapy.

Hand-Tied Construction The hand-tied wig cap can be constructed using two methods. Method 1: The ENTIRE cap, meaning the front, sides, and back (as opposed to just a specific section) is constructed by manually hand tying individual hair fibers to the mesh base. This is called 100% hand tied. Method 2: Only a SECTION of the cap, such as the top is hand-tied, and the rest of the cap is machine wefted. This method allows your natural skin tone to show through, giving the look of natural hair growing from your scalp. The hand-tied construction imitates the natural movement of real hair. It is considered to be a softer, more comfortable cap, and is also lightweight and well ventilated, which is great for someone with a more sensitive scalp or hair loss. Lace Front Construction Lace front wig caps are made using a virtually sheer lace material along the front hairline and are designed to create a natural looking front hairline so the hair can be styled away from your face or even pulled back. The lace can extend from temple to temple, and also ear to ear, depending on the manufacturer. Each hair is individually hand-tied to the sheer lace, creating the illusion of natural looking hair. For this reason, the lace front wig is often referenced as the wig with an “invisible hairline”. This feature is sometimes combined with a monofilament top 100% hand-tied base, which can be a costlier option. Exclusively By The Wig Company

There are two types of wig caps that are made exclusively by The Wig Company. The Sleep Wig and the Soft Stretch Wig. Both wigs caps are designed specifically with comfort and durability in mind. Sleep Wig The Sleep Wig cap is designed for women that have no hair or very little hair and can be worn, during the day, while you sleep, or during hospital stays. Made with a Total Capless Construction, this night n day cap is lined with a very soft 100% nylon stretchable mesh material, resulting in a comfortable and secure fit. Attached to the sleep wig cap is a 100% nylon lace headband that has an easy-access Velcro adjustment strip along the front. Each Sleep Wig comes with removable smooth bangs. Soft Stretch Soft Stretch wigs offer clever integration of softer and wider perimeter stretch bands, and a new stitching technology. Here are its features: Soft Stretch Hairline – A soft lightweight fabric with subtle stretch ability located at the front underside of the wig cap. This treatment provides a lighter, cooler front hairline with moderate, soft stretch fabric. Soft Stretch Ear Tabs – Designed with soft expandable fabric attached to the ear tabs, resulting in a contoured custom fit. Other ear tab designs do not have the same ability to aid in comfort or in fit. Soft Stretch Nape – Gently and securely hugs and conforms to your neckline. The standard nape on all other wig caps is not designed with the stretchability to conform to the back of the neck.

Soft Stretch Circumference Bands – A softer fabric with a 2 1/2 times wider band that eases tension between the ears and the nape. All other wig cap designs are made with a thinner, not as soft fabric, and will in some cause uncomfortable depression lines in the area between the ears and the nape. Soft Flex Combs - Tiny, flexible, weightless combs for added security. The Soft Stretch wig cap design incorporates three flexible combs sewn to the inside of the wig cap, one at the front and one at each side of the wig cap. These combs slide easily through your hair for added security. Soft Weave Wefting – Generally in most wig designs wefts are sewn in straight rows from left to right, this type of wefting limits the flow of thestyling of the fiber. In Soft Stretch the wefts are sewn in a wavy pattern. This technique offers a cooler cap design and allows more air flow to your scalp for better fiber movement and more styling versatility. Life Life Fiber - A TWC exclusive from Kanekalon featuring ultra-light denier fiber strands combined with traditional fiber, resulting in more coverage and volume, and a wi that is 25% lighter in weight. This guide will walk you through the ins and outs of the 4 Cs of Wigs: Cut, Cap Size, Composition and Color.

Wigs UK

  1. Start with Style Step 1: Hair Cut Our site lets you easily narrow your search by length, texture and hairstyle. At the beginning, you may want to stick close to a style you're familiar with. A more drastic change can always be made later as you get used to wearing a wig. That's when the fun begins. Just think: endless style flexibility! Many of our clients ultimately have a lot of fun experimenting with a variety of looks. Certain face shapes are flattered by certain styles. Consult our guide for some tips! 2. Find Your Capsize Step 2: Cap SizeWhile average size wigs tend to fit about 95% of customers, you will find that quite a few wigs also come in petite and large sizes. Consider that many also have adjustable straps that give up to 1/2" so that you can achieve a comfortable and secure fit. To determine the right size wig for you, measure the circumference of your head from the front hairline, behind your ear, to the nape of your neck, to your other ear and then back to the front hairline. Jot down your measurement, then consult the table below. Please note that sizes may vary slightly by brand and that not all wigs are available in all cap sizes. Cap Size Chart

  3. What Type of Hair is Right for You? Step 3: Composition When considering composition, or how a wig is structured, think about the hair type as well as the cap construction. While you may have preconceived notions about human hair and synthetic hair, the truth is that they both have advantages and limitations, which make them the right choice in different situations. Human Hair Premium & Remy Human Hair Synthetic Hair Heat Friendly Synthetic Hair offers the most natural look & feel the highest quality human hair available higher quality synthetic hair offer a look and feel quite similar to human hair offers more styling versatility (hot tools may be used - max temp. set at 280° F) presents the most styling versatility hair cuticles kept running in uniform direction resulting in less tangling offers limited styling versatility (hot tools cannot be used) can be more challenging to style than human hair requires more styling - especially after washing more careful collecting and processing techniques result in higher quality product and contribute to higher price requires little maintenance & can usually be worn right out of the box special care must be taken to avoid tangling very durable - can last over a year with proper care* less durable than human hair — 4-6 months with proper care* less durable than regular synthetic hair — 2-3 months with proper care*

Choose Your Cap Feature Different cap constructions each have a different method of attaching hair to the cap, and each has its own set of advantages. 100% hand tied Creates the most natural movement as each hair moves freely Each hair on the entire cap is hand-tied onto the base The softest and most comfortable cap, it's ideal for a sensitive scalp & hair loss Allows for styling versatility as you can comb the hair in any direction Also known as 100% hand-knotted

Monofilament Creates the illusion of natural hair growth from the scalp where the hair is parted Each hair is individually hand-tied to a sheer base (but not entire cap) Can be found just at the crown, along a pre-defined part or across the full top A full mono top allows for parting & styling versatility A double mono has an extra layer of soft material for added comfort Lace Front Creates the illusion of a natural-looking front hairline Each hair is individually hand-tied to a section of sheer lace (but not entire cap) Allows for styling hair away from the face Most are ready-to-wear & temple-to-temple Made with a delicate material that should be handled with care Basic Cap Includes both capless and traditional constructions

Most durable & affordable Most or all of the cap has open wefting for better air ventilation Often gives the hair a natural lift with built-in volume at the crown Hair is pre-teased at the root to help mask the cap beneath 5. Choosing Color Step 4: Color As most styles offer a range of color choices, this is a good final step. As you zero in on styles you like, you can begin to review the colors available. If you're new to wearing wigs, consider staying close to your natural shade to ease the transition. TruColor Only at Wigs.com will you find the TruColor™ approach to displaying color options. TruColor images are captured in our extremely controlled studio environment, which enables us to produce the most consistently accurate color swatches. And over time we have worked diligently to offer our customers yet another improvement on our TruColor program - images of full wig styles in every color available.  Welcome, new wig wearers! You probably have some questions about selecting your perfect piece, so we’ve provided this comprehensive guide with tips for beginners to walk you through the process step by step. Below you will find tips and basic wig information written by our experts. Choosing your size Ensuring you get the most comfort from wearing a wig we always recommend you take a few quick measurements at home. First you’ll want to determine which size hairpiece is the best fit for you. There are four sizes: The ultra petite is the smallest, and fits heads from 19 to 20 inches in circumference The petite cap is slightly larger, for heads measuring 20 to 21 inches. The average cap is considered “one size fits most,” and some wigs will be available in this size only. This cap is for heads between 21 and 22 ½ inches.

The large cap fits heads from 22 ½ inches up to 24 inches. In order to determine your ideal size, you’ll need to measure your head. This can be easily accomplished by using a tailor’s tape measure, found at most grocery or drug stores. Place the end of the tape measure at your front hairline Move the tape around your head, and over your left ear Go around the nape of your neck, or back hairline Move the tape around the right side, over your ear, and up front again This number will tell you your head’s circumference. However, when purchasing a custom-made piece, you’ll need to take two additional measurements One from left ear to right ear, over the top of your head The second from front hairline to back hairline Whichever of these three measurements is the largest, that’s your size! If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of our professionals at 1-800-927-0874.

Finding your style Finding the right style can sometimes be the hardest part of wig shopping. Most synthetic pieces are the best choice because they’re cut to retain their style. A human hair wig is higher maintenance and must be styled often, just like natural hair. Synthetic wigs are available in a range of styles and lengths. If you decide you’d like to change your look, a hairstylist can easily make custom alterations to a synthetic piece. This can make the experience feel like working with your own natural hair. If you’re thinking of restyling your synthetic, be sure to consult a stylist who works with wigs on a regular basis, and has skilled training in the field. Human hair wigs are available in one length, which gives you the freedom to choose any style you like. If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of our professionals at 1-800-927-0874. Finding your color This part is fun. You’ll want to find a shade that suits both your skin tone and your personality.
